SLEEP, LEARNING & MEMORY

SLEEP, LEARNING & MEMORY
Is there a connection?
Yes, sleep studies show that sleep plays a critical part in memory both before and after learning a new concept. The absence of healthy sleep not only affects our mood, and perception of what goes on around us but it also affects our motivation and judgement.

I can remember studying all night for my first college exam and then going out on a date that night to a brand new popular movie with, Tim, a very nice guy.  The theatre was dark, the chairs were comfortable, and I did fall asleep.  I am sure my 'learning' ability in my other classes that day was useless not to mention how rude I was to fall asleep on a date.  If we are not alert we can cause car accidents, decisions at work that are critical to your future employment, and mistakes that are irreversible.

WHAT IS HEALTHY SLEEP?

There are five stages of sleep.
Stage 1:  A transition of awake and going to sleep
Stage 2:  Body temperature drops, our brain waves change - lasts about 20 minutes
Stage 3:  We transition between light and deep sleep
Stage 4:  Lasts about 30 minutes and is going into deep sleep. Sleepwalking occurs here.
Stage 5:  Deep sleep, our brain activity actually increases as do other body systems and our muscles relax.  Our voluntary muscles are actually paralyzed during stage 5.

Sleep, learning and memory are connected in a very real way.  The quality of sleep is so important and it affects our confidence in ourselves because how we learn and retain what we learn is tied up in self perception.  For at least 30 minutes prior to sleep we need to turn off the TV, computer, and our cell phone.  Creating a sleep atmosphere that is comfortable to each one of us is important.  So many of us do not take HEALTHY SLEEP seriously.  It is important in all of our relationships, our self image, and our careers.

Helping that along is using the right essential oil.  Start with Lavender....and I will admit something it's not my favorite but it works on me.  I have many friends who love Lavender and so does my husband.  I diffuse it, put it on the sides of my neck or include it with my body lotion.  It 'always' relaxes me and I am always amazed.  Spark Naturals Essential Oil is affordable.  It's a little lovely plant with so many uses.  Helping to sleep is just one.
